When it comes to Europe, most travellers typically set their sights on in-demand cities like Paris, Rome, or Barcelona. With that said, if you venture a little further east, you’ll uncover a treasure trove of destinations that are every bit as enchanting, if not more – just without the insane hordes of tourists and overpriced lattes. Whether it’s rugged mountains or medieval towns that are buzzing with nightlife and underrated beaches that you seek, here’s your guide to Eastern Europe’s less discovered wonders.

Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of Europe’s most undervalued destinations. The country’s complex history is reflected in its architecture, featuring mosques, Catholic churches, and Orthodox cathedrals that stand side by side. Mostar is a must-visit, with its iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) where daredevils plunge from, and cobbled old town that looks like something out of a fairytale.
Sarajevo, the capital, is an absolute gem. It’s one of the few places where you can sip Bosnian coffee in a centuries-old bazaar, visit a museum about Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, and ski in the surrounding mountains, all in the same day. And for nature lovers, the emerald-green waters of Una National Park affords an oasis of waterfalls, wildlife, and rafting adventures.
Highlights: An enchanting bridge, rich history, and breathtaking nature.

Montenegro
Montenegro is often overshadowed by its glitzy neighbour Croatia, but this tiny country packs a serious punch. Kotor, a medieval town nestled between towering mountains and the dazzling Bay of Kotor, is straight out of a fantasy novel. The cobbled streets, hidden squares, and ancient fortresses make it a dream for history lovers and photographers alike. Don’t forget to hike the Kotor Fortress for the most spectacular views!
The coastline, however, is just the beginning. Venture inland to Durmitor National Park, where dramatic peaks and glacial lakes offer some of the most incredible hiking and rafting in Europe. If you’re craving a beach escape, skip the crowded resorts and head to the quiet shores of Ulcinj, where Montenegro’s hidden gem awaits.
Highlights: A medieval bay town, stunning national parks, and unspoiled beaches.

Kosovo
Kosovo may be Europe’s youngest country (the country gained independence from Serbia in 2008), but its history stretches back centuries. Pristina, the capital, buzzes with energy, with a café and food culture that rivals any European hotspot, sans the hefty price tags. That said, the real magic lies in the country’s small towns like Prizren, featuring an Ottoman-era charm and picturesque riverside setting.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, the Rugova Canyon and the Accursed Mountains are not to be missed for spectacular hiking in the Balkans. As for food, you can expect a mix of Albanian, Turkish, and Serbian influences – think flaky burek pastries and succulent grilled meats, preferably enjoyed in family-run tavernas that have been operating for decades.
Highlights: A vibrant food culture, charming small towns, epic mountain hikes.

Albania
Albania’s beaches are not often talked about, and frankly, it’s a mystery why more people haven’t caught on yet. The Albanian Riviera boasts crystal-clear waters, rugged cliffs, and quaint seaside villages like Ksamil and Dhermi. If you love places like Greece, Albania is definitely worth adding to your travel checklist.
Beyond the beaches, the capital, Tirana, is a unique amalgamation of Ottoman, Italian, and Soviet influences, full with colourful buildings and lively markets that add to its charm. Further inland, the ancient city of Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” is a UNESCO treasure filled with Ottoman houses and cobbled streets travellers should really see for themselves.
Highlights: Pristine beaches, a dynamic capital, and historical charm.

North Macedonia
North Macedonia may not be the first place that pops into your mind when planning a trip, but it truly should be. The capital, Skopje, is delightfully bizarre, showcasing colossal statues, baroque buildings, and a modernist twist. The real magic however, happens outside the city in Ohrid, a lakeside town with medieval churches and crystalline waters that seem magical.
If you’re into hiking, Mavrovo National Park extends breathtaking mountain trails and even the chance to spot lynxes in the wild. Let’s also not forget the food – North Macedonia’s rich culinary scene, influenced by Ottoman and Balkan flavours, means you’ll be indulging in some seriously yummy dishes like tavče gravče (a spiced bean stew).
Highlights: A quirky capital, a stunning lakeside town, and incredible hiking trails.

Serbia
Serbia is the kind of place that surprises you. Belgrade, its capital, feels like a mashup of Berlin’s underground scene and Istanbul’s café culture, with a touch of grit. The nightlife here is legendary, with floating river clubs (called splavs) keep the party going till sunrise. Besides that, Serbia is home to tranquil monasteries, sprawling national parks, and the stunning Uvac Canyon, where white-tailed eagles glide over turquoise waters.
For something unexpected, head to the wine region of Fruska Gora or explore the quirky town of Niš, where history buffs can visit the eerie Skull Tower, a macabre reminder of the country’s Ottoman past. Whether you’re in Serbia for rakija-fuelled (a fruit brandy) revelry or a quiet countryside escape, Serbia really delivers.
Highlights: Lively nightlife, scenic national parks, and hidden wine regions.
