To celebrate its first anniversary, the visionary Janu Tokyo is hosting a special collaboration fusing the disciplines of gastronomy and art from 15 March to 11 May 2025. Happening simultaneously with contemporary artist Tomokazu Matsuyama’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo at the nearby Azabudai Hills Gallery, the partnership presents Afternoon Tea with Art.
The event, happening at the Janu Lounge & Garden Terrace, showcases a collection of sweet and savoury treats as part of an afternoon tea inspired by Matsuyama’s latest series ‘FIRST LAST’. All hotel guests will also receive complimentary tickets to Matsuyama’s exhibition, along with a rare opportunity to purchase one of 30 limited-edition prints of his new work, Nice Quiet Hot Tears, at Janu Tokyo’s boutique.

Intricately crafted in both flavour and aesthetic by Janu Tokyo Pastry Chef, Yukie Noguchi, each piece of the afternoon tea will be embellished with symbolistic imagery drawn from works of the ‘FIRST LAST’ exhibition. The first and third tiers are derived from works such as Passage Immortalitas, while the second tier integrates elements of his abstract painting Keep Fishinʼ For Twilight, weaving the spirit of a thousand origami cranes.
Afternoon Tea with Art spotlights New York cheesecake with white chocolate, the signature ‘Januron’ macaron and a Sakura and berry mousse with seasonal fruit. Meanwhile, savoury options range from a roast beef open sandwich, with beef from Matsuyama’s hometown in the Gifu Prefecture, as well as salmon mousse with a vegetable mille-feuille and bouillabaisse jelly with caviar. Plain and cherry scones complete the selection, served with soya bean whipped cream, koji syrup and strawberry jam.

From 15 March to 11 May 2025, Janu Tokyo will showcase a selection of Matsuyama’s pieces throughout the property, with a book by the artist placed in every guestroom. Running concurrently with the ‘FIRST LAST’ exhibition at the Azabudai Hills Gallery, visitors to Janu Tokyo will be treated to a complimentary welcome drink on presentation of their ticket when dining at any of Janu Tokyo’s six restaurants.
The exclusive Afternoon Tea with Art by Tomokazu Matsuyama will be available from 15 March to 11 May 2025 in the Janu Lounge & Garden Terrace daily from 12 to 5PM, with reservations now available online.
