Introducing TA’AKTANA: A New Stunning Luxury Resort in Indonesia

This ethereal escape marks Marriott International’s first property on Flores Island and is scheduled to open at the end of May 2024.

Indonesia has become a veritable paradise of idyllic resorts, with most predominantly scattered across Bali. However, a new contender has arrived for the discerning traveller seeking a fresh destination amidst the country’s 17,000 islands and more. Unbeknownst to some, the small fishing town of Labuan Bajo has gradually evolved into a natural haven over the years and TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, under Marriott International, is set to welcome travellers to a magical escape, combining luxury, elegance, and a taste of adventure when it opens at the end of May 2024.

Nestled on the western coast of Flores in eastern Indonesia, the beachfront sanctuary of TA’AKTANA is designed to complement Labuan Bajo’s unique heritage, surrounding lush greenery and uninterrupted ocean views for an immersive stay. For example, the resort’s interconnected network of pathways is inspired by the local lingko fields’ web-shaped rice terraces.

Accommodation

Brimming with modern elegance, guests are assured of the utmost comfort at the 70-key TA’AKTANA resort, with accommodations ranging between 12 different categories such as suites, overwater sea villas, and the most lavish of them all, a three-bedroom mansion. They all boast state-of-the-art facilities, ultra-luxury amenities and stylish interiors that reflect the traditional village of Wae Rebo’s unique architecture.

With 25 villas and 45 suites, guests may be spoilt for choice but here’s a tip: the entry-level Wae Rana Suite is utterly spacious at 742 square feet but for the best sea views, opt for the similarly-sized TA’AKTANA Suite. For bigger parties, the three-bedroom mansion and its 4,939 square feet of space offer a maximum occupancy of eight with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a separate living room. Every villa guest, however, can enjoy the 24-hour butler service.

Dining

TA’AKTANA has five on-site restaurants for guests to enjoy, offering tantalising grilled platters at Taba, a variety of cuisines at Leros, Indonesian delights at Umasa, and, for a mix of everything else, Maiga! and Nera Lounge are there to please. Coffee enthusiasts might enjoy the resort’s exclusive Coffee Roastery where they can explore and indulge in the various beans harvested from Flores and the roasting process.

Facilities

In terms of amenities, be wowed by the Olympic-sized pool or rejuvenate at the Di’a Spa which embodies the best of Mother Nature to soothe away stresses and aches. For anyone planning for their nuptials (or an elopement), TA’AKTANA has a beachfront chapel on Salang Hill that overlooks the glittering Flores sea.

Culture

The best experiences, though, await outside the comforts of TA’AKTANA. Labuan Bajo, the capital of the West Manggarai Regency, is rich in culture – it is also home to the indigenous Manggarai people – and maritime traditions. Adventurers should head for the Komodo National Park where around 5,700 Komodo dragons reside across three larger islands (Komodo, Padar and Rinca) that, together, have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pink beaches may be famed in Australia but there’s one too just 8.8km away from Komodo Island. Accessible via a 30-minute boat ride from Loh Liang port, the exotic Pink Beach is a sight to behold where its mesmerising hue is the result of the tiny red coral fragments mixed with the striking white sands. While you’re here, the locals recommend snorkelling and diving for an unforgettable underwater experience of the vibrant coral reefs and teeming aquatic life. Alternatively, head for Manta Point where snorkelers and divers can encounter the majestic manta rays during the dry season from May to October.

Batu Cermin Cave.

Another hidden gem in Labuan Bajo is the Batu Cermin Cave, which presents a breathtaking phenomenon thanks to its geological composition. Witness shimmering reflections when sunlight enters the cave and hits the translucent calcite, creating a mirror effect. For a better panoramic view of fantastical sunsets (and sunrises), Kanawa Island features Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach, each boasting exactly what its name suggests.

One can’t forget about the local delicacies. Besides fresh seafood specialities, Labuan Bajo is also proud of its vast selection of Flores Coffee but the signature Manggarai coffee is an absolute must-try. If you’re up for it, order a Sopi too. It’s a Labuan Bajo alcoholic beverage, commonly served at traditional ceremonies, graduations and weddings. Made from palm tree fruits, it has a milky-white colour, a distinct aroma and a pleasantly sweet taste.

When all is said and done, retreat to TA’AKTANA before another day’s worth of either relaxation or exploration. What more can one ask out of a holiday?
