Bhutan’s New Airport Will Be A Gateway to the Land of Happiness

With this new airport, Bhutan takes a huge step toward welcoming the world while preserving the essence of what makes it extraordinary.

Bhutan is a nation synonymous with happiness, tranquility, and sustainable living, enveloped by the mystical beauty of the Himalayas. Unlike most countries that measure success by GDP, this landlocked nation in South Asia adopts a Gross National Happiness philosophy, prioritising the well-being of its citizens by ensuring balanced economic, environmental, and cultural progress.

It comes as no surprise that the kingdom has long been a destination for mindful travellers seeking serenity and cultural richness, and even more so now with Bhutan’s newly announced Gelephu International airport – a state-of-the-art gateway that’s aptly designed to reflect the country’s values while enhancing connectivity and accessibility for visitors in the most visually soothing space that radiates tranquility.

A Harmonious Feat of Design

True to Bhutan’s architectural heritage, the new airport will effortlessly integrate modern architecture with traditional Bhutanese aesthetics, designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group. Featuring intricate wood carvings, golden-hued dzong-style roofs, and expansive windows framing the breathtaking Himalayan landscape, the terminal will embody the country’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural identity.

Needless to say, the airport is being designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating eco-friendly materials, solar energy, and a water conservation system to ascertain a minimal environmental impact. Adding on to that, a large portion of the wooden diamond-shaped structures will purposefully be made modular so that updating or expanding the airport will be much more of a breeze.

Elevating the Travel Experience

Beyond a transit hub, the airport will be an experience in itself. Travellers arriving in Bhutan are greeted with a serene ambience, adorned with prayer flags, traditional murals, and soothing Bhutanese music. A dedicated meditation lounge invites passengers to immerse themselves in a moment of calm before embarking on their journey. Furthermore, the terminal will house a showcase of Bhutanese craftsmanship, offering locally made textiles, artisan goods, and organic produce for travellers to explore.

Redefining Bhutan’s Travel Landscape

Bhutan’s stringent tourism policy ensures that travel to the country remains sustainable and exclusive. With the addition of this new airport, accessibility to the kingdom is enhanced while maintaining its commitment to high-value, low-impact tourism.

The airport will accommodate larger aircraft, increasing direct international connections and reducing travel time for visitors. Additionally, streamlined visa processes and improved passenger services will make it easier for travellers to experience Bhutan’s untouched landscapes and cultural wonders.

Gelephu International will accommodate 731,946 square feet of space and up to 123 flights daily, with a maximum of 1.3 million passengers annually. There hasn’t been any word on the official opening on this airport, but for those seeking an unforgettable journey, Bhutan’s newest arrival point promises a seamless and enriching start to an adventure unlike any other.

Not many people can say they’ve been to Bhutan, so you’ll have a unique adventure to share – and perhaps even a little travel bragging rights.
