The tradition of appreciating autumn foliage, known as ‘momijigari’ in Japan and ‘hongye’ in China, dates back centuries. In Japan, it is believed to have originated during the Heian period (794-1185) when aristocrats would travel into the countryside to admire the changing leaves.

The peak season typically falls between late November and early December, making it the ideal time to witness nature’s artistry. During this time, iconic locations like Ruriko-in Temple and Tofukuji Temple offer breathtaking displays. 

Ruriko-in, nestled at the foot of Mount Hiei, is known for its limited public access and the mirrored reflections of fall colours on its polished floors. On the other hand, Tofukuji Temple, with its iconic Tsutenkyo Bridge, provides a panoramic view of a valley ablaze with red maple leaves.

Miaoli is a mountainous county nestled between Hsinchu and Taichung in northern central Taiwan. The region’s mountains and valleys become a canvas of vibrant colours during autumn, as the leaves of maple trees turn into shades of red, orange, and yellow. 

October is an especially good time to visit, as the weather is pleasantly warm and slightly windy, with temperatures typically ranging from 69 to 77°F. One of the highlights of Miaoli’s fall foliage is the Maple Viewing Trail in Xihu Township. Visitors can leisurely stroll along the path, taking in the beauty of the foliage and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
